Created in 2010 at the behest of the Bordeaux and Bordeaux
Supérieur appellations, the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon quickly received the
support of the Loire appellations and many other Sauvignon-producing wine
regions around the world
The first two
Competitions took place in Bordeaux. In
2013, the competition then moved to the Loire, where members of the jury
conducted tastings in Blois and toured wineries from Touraine to Sancerre
The Vinopres team, creators and organisers of the Concours
Mondial de Bruxelles, has used its expertise to grow the Concours Mondial du
Sauvignon internationally over the last three years. This year, it has announced the setting up of
a steering committee to create a database on Sauvignon, helped by the
competition.
This committee will be made
up of multi-disciplinary team of experts, who will be tasked with publishing
and sharing Sauvignon-related literature in their respective countries. The team will be coordinated by Sharon Nagel,
a France-based, English freelance journalist, who will be working with Pedro
Ballesteros MW (Spain), David Cobbold, Valérie Lavigne from the Bordeaux
Faculty of Oenology, Pilippo Pszczolkowski Tomaszewski from the Faculty of
Agriculture and Forestry of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Paul
White (New Zealand, USA) and Roberto Zironi from the University of Udine
(Italy).
The fourth edition of the
competition, which took place at the start of April, saw its return to
Bordeaux. 59 judges, of 15 different
nationalities, evaluated 751 wines from 21 Sauvignon-producing regions around
the world, including four newcomers: Slovenia, Serbia, Colombia and Japan
(click here to see the results).
The 2015 Competition will take place in Friuli, Italy. The announcement was made at the close of the
2014 edition by Hervé Grandeau, President of the Bordeaux and Bordeaux
Supérieur interprofession, alongside Marc Medeville and Bernard Vincent, the
Competition’s founder. The “torch”,
represented by a vine of Sauvignon, was handed over to representatives from the
Friuli appellation during the competition's closing ceremony.
